Do you remember the old story of the ant and the grasshopper? The grasshopper goes out and eats galore like there is no tomorrow while the ant stores up a little bit at a time. The ant makes it and the grasshopper goes without. The ant knew the secret; the grasshopper did not.
Go to the ant, O sluggard, observe her ways and be wise, which, having no chief, officer or ruler, prepares her food in the summer, and gathers her provision in the harvest. PRO 6:6-8
In the days ahead, the world will be changed. Our country will be changed and our cities and towns will be changed. In the days ahead, the wise will have prepared for these changes. The unwise will be wondering what happened and be in great need.
The parable of the ten virgins is a classic teaching on preparation. It speaks of preparing lamps for the darkness and the coming of the Lord. The wise prepare; the unwise go without and are left behind. The story of Noah is a good example of preparation. Noah built an ark as God instructed to provide refuge, food, and deliverance from the flood for both the animals and his family. The story of Joseph is another good example of using the time before the calamity to prepare for the need. There is a secret element, however, in all these examples which is critical for us in preparing for the great tribulation.
The Great Tribulation will be a series of events on the earth far more devastating than anything we have known before. Yeshua and the prophets tried to warn us. They tried to let us know about the changes that are coming.
And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued. DAN 12:1
For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever shall. And unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days shall be cut short. MAT 24:21-22
The Scriptures tell us much about what will happen in the Great Tribulation. We are told what judgments will fall, their sequence, and the cataclysmic changes that will come to the earth. There is enough information for serious believers to prepare initially for those days and wait for God's great deliverance.
How do we prepare for such events? As a reader of this newsletter, you already have a sense of things coming and are wondering what your part will be. What preparations have you already made? If you are like most folks, you haven't prepared enough for the things you know, let alone the things you don't know about. Some argue that preparing anything is foolishness and shows a lack of faith. Worse yet, some scorn the idea of preparing anything, as though it is an advanced form of paranoia in these modern times. Others are asking serious questions about what can be done in a realistic way. Most sense that the greatest need for preparation is spiritual instead of physical.
On this last point, I heartily agree. Give me a man who has prepared all the food, water, and shelter he will need and who loses heart. I’ll give you a dead man. Give me a man with nothing physical prepared who keeps faith with the one true God and I’ll give you a survivor. Give me a man who trusts the Living God giving his life for others and I will give you a man who is delivered by God in the day of his trouble.
How blessed is he who considers the helpless; the Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble. The Lord will protect him, and keep him alive, and he shall be called blessed upon the earth; and do not give him over to the desire of his enemies. PSA 41:1-2
Maybe you don't believe the Lord is coming back in your lifetime. Maybe you are hoping that you get raptured first. Maybe you believe that you can reshuffle a few resources and weather it out hunkered down in your own place. Maybe you don't really believe any of this stuff.
Wherever your head and heart is at right now is only a matter that you and God know about. If you don't believe in God or believe what He has said, then you no longer need to read any further. However, if you hear the Spirit of God speaking down inside warning you to prepare, then you need to understand the three destinies for the saints in the Great Tribulation. It is only the last destiny that needs to prepare.
Destiny number one taken captive
The Lord has said that some of us will be arrested and that we will be killed. Captivity is not waiting for the Lord in a prison cell. It is being processed just like the holocaust, only this time, modern technology will be employed. Being taken captive means that you stayed longer than you should have. It means that others hated you and delivered you up. Listen to the words of Yeshua concerning this specific issue.
And when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not be anxious beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit. And brother will deliver brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. MAR 13:11-12
Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. REV 2:10
Martyrdom is the destiny of many in the faith. It has been in the past, it is in the present, and it will be in the future. Only the American churchman today thinks it is no more. I expect many of them to be taken captive.
... if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints. REV 13:10b
Those who use deadly force will die by deadly force. Should we defend our loved ones? Yes. The Scripture says that the man who does not provide for his own family is worse than an infidel. Does this include defense of his family? Yes. But storing up arms and threatening others is not a defense of one's family. Taking up arms with others to threaten civil authority is a sure recipe for an early death in the Great Tribulation. There will be some who do this and advocate others to do it. They will mix freedom, national sovereignty, and personal fear with the end time prophecies. They will die by the very weapons that they pick up.
Consider the following and decide on your best choice. Would it be better to get into one fire fight with your rifle defending a small piece of ground, die, and your family go through the Great Tribulation without you? Or, would it be better to escape with your family, knowing that the Lord will shortly return, you live, and care for your family all the days of the tribulation?
If you decide that taking up your sword is your destiny, then we will look forward to seeing you at the resurrection.
Destiny number three is also called deliverance by God. It is being kept from the hour of temptation that will come upon the whole world.
But keep on the alert at all times, praying in order that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man. LUK 21:36
But whenever they persecute you in this city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you shall not finish going through the cities of Israel, until the Son of Man comes. MAT 10:23
And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be delivered; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls. JOE 2:32
Yet, behold, survivors will be left in it who will be brought out, both sons and daughters. Behold, they are going to come forth to you and you will see their conduct and actions; then you will be comforted for the calamity which I have brought against Jerusalem for everything which I have brought upon it. EZE 14:22
But the one who endures to the end, he shall be saved. MAT 24:13
Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell upon the earth. REV 3:10
The words escape, survive, and endure have specific meanings. Escape means that you must flee from the danger. You will flee from those who come to harm and to take you captive. Survive means having the basics of life ? food, water, and shelter. Endure means to keep the faith, to believe in the promises of God.
ESCAPING
Escaping will be hard for many. This will be the decision point for those who are taken captive. Some will not leave their homes and communities when the time comes to escape. Yeshua spoke very specifically about this in the following:
Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains; let him who is on the housetop not go down to get the things out that are in his house; and let him who is in the field not turn back to get his cloak. But woe to those who are with child and to those who nurse babes in those days! But pray that your flight may not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath; for then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever shall. MAT 24:15-21
This passage, while addressed specifically to those in Judea in Israel at the start of the Great Tribulation, contains a clear warning in the manner that we are to flee. When it is time to escape, it is time to escape. We are not to be making preparation, getting a few things together, going back to our house, etc. Anything that hinders the escape such as caring for children or the weather, we are warned to avoid. Fleeing and escaping is a very serious matter. This requires serious preparation. The best time to escape is before things get out of control. There lies the problem, knowing when to go. That means being on watch, being sober, and paying attention. But most of all it means making the decision to escape before the need. Yeshua has given a general warning about escaping for all peoples and in all places.
Remember Lot's wife. LUK 17:32
For those of you who don't remember, Lot's wife did not want to leave Sodom at the time of judgment. Whether it was her family, or her friends, or just her stuff, she turned back and died. When it comes time to escape from your home and community, you will be tempted very seriously to get one more thing, speak to one more person, or to simply hesitate.
Willingness to escape is a demonstration of faith and obedience, but where to flee has to do with preparation. Does this mean that we should flee to the mountains? I don't recommend that simply because of the traffic jam getting there. Everyone, even the heathen, will be doing that. As a general rule of escape, do the opposite of everyone else. If everyone is running, you stop. If everyone is stopped, you run. The great danger in fleeing is hurting others and being hurt by others in a panic. Escaping with God and panic with men are two separate and distinct things.
Cities will become dangerous. People in cities will riot and go chaotic. People will hurt other people. You need to be gone, but where will you go? This is where preparation provides an answer. Wherever it is, it must be 10 to 15 miles outside of a major city and not where everyone else wants to go.
Here are some final hints on when and how to escape the city. 1) Stay in fellowship with like minded brethren. Establish you own emergency notification network. 2) Have a “go bag” with clothes, tent, and essentials. 3) When the power goes down in the city and including the loss of telephones, AM/FM radio stations, and/or local television stations, it means that the power is intentionally being shut-off. (Telephones, radio stations, and television stations have back-up power.) If the power is being shut-off, it means that the city is in an emergency condition. It means that you must leave immediately before the perimeter is established by civil and military authority. It may mean that martial law has been imposed.
SURVIVAL
Survival is what most people think about in preparing for the Great Tribulation. They think about food, water and shelter. It is shelter that needs to be prepared first.
Years ago, I took a wilderness survival course. I lived in Colorado at the time and wanted to enjoy the mountains, but I wanted to be safe also. The course I took was a basic reminder that is applicable to the Great Tribulation. The priority of these three items (food, water, and shelter) is in reverse order. You need shelter before you need water and food. You need water before you need food. A man can die in two hours from exposure, two days without water, or in two weeks without food. Sun stroke and hypothermia are life threatening scenarios. Dehydration is simply no fun and will make you very ill. However, losing a little weight will improve your figure and raise your self esteem. These priorities must be honored in any preparation plan.
Those who survive the Great Tribulation will be required to deal with hunger, thirst, and a very hot sun. The sun will scorch all of the planet. The sun's heat will be a greater problem than food and water. Shelter from the elements is your first priority in preparing for the Great Tribulation.
These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; neither shall the sun beat down on them, nor any heat; REV 7:14,16
When Israel fled from Egypt into the wilderness, the people brought their huts (booths). They did not bring water or food. When you flee, have your tent already in the car or ready to go. Better yet, have a place already in mind that you can flee to. It needs to be reachable within an hour and be out of the city. If you already live outside the city, then consider the reality of many believers coming to you having made no preparation.
Water is the second priority in surviving. You will need lots of water. You must drink a lot of water in the heat to avoid dehydration. You will need water for cooking. You will need water for bathing and sanitation. This requires serious preparation, especially if you must escape from your primary residence in a city. If you are preparing a place out of the city, water should be considered heavily in your preparation. Streams, lakes, and rivers will attract others. You should be more concerned with wells, rain water cisterns, and storage containers. The promise in Isaiah seems most appropriate for this point.
They will not hunger or thirst, neither will the scorching heat or sun strike them down; for He who has compassion on them will lead them, and will guide them to springs of water. ISA 49:10
Storing food is a very important element in preparation for the Great Tribulation. Generally, you need to store foods that require no refrigeration or freezing. The best long term foods are those made by God Himself. Grains, beans and honey are just a few. Canned food is good for 18-24 months. If you have grains, you need a mill. Here is our dilemma in the United States. Our generation is techno-modern trained. We don't even know how to mill and make bread. Preparation here is not only what to get but what to do with it after you get it.
How much should you get? Where should you put it? These questions and more exist and should be answered in your preparation planning. However, you need to understand the real reason you are storing food.
It is for your brethren who didn’t have any faith to prepare. Your faith is in God who can make manna appear before the dew. Your faith is in God who can divide some fish and loaves and feed thousands. Quite honestly, if you don't know this God and He does not feed you, then you and everyone you know will not make it through the Great Tribulation.
Yeshua has warned us very seriously about sharing with our brethren. If we share with the least of our brethren, then we have given it to Him. If we don’t share, then we have not shared it with Him. If you are serious about God delivering you, then you better get serious about helping to deliver His brethren. Our Messiah used the discussion of the end times to explain a very key principle about survival.
Whoever seeks to keep his life shall lose it, and whoever loses his life shall preserve it. LUK 17:33
ENDURANCE
Enduring is the tough one. Enduring is hanging in there with nothing left to hang on. Enduring is believing when there is nothing left. Enduring is promoting spirit over the body (flesh) and soul (emotions). Preparing to endure is spiritual.
One aspect of the Great Tribulation that is very hard for us to understand and prepare for is the time of darkness, the final days of the indignation, the last five months of the Great Tribulation. Just getting through the first three years will be a major accomplishment, but the most difficult doesn't come until this last period. The Scripture calls it the first woe (the 5th trumpet). A star (comet, meteorite, asteroid) falls to the earth in the deep impact scenario. The abyss of the earth opens with great clouds of debris and dust being cast into the atmosphere. The sun, moon, and stars are darkened. It will suddenly hit everyone: the planet is dying. To add insult to injury, demons are released and rampage around the earth terrorizing mankind. How do you prepare for the fear (the base instinct/emotion of survival)? The fact that we are on a dying planet mixed with demonic terror will be the defining moment for endurance. It is also when the secret to preparation takes full effect.
The secret of the Lord is for those who fear Him... PSA 25:14
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread? PSA 27:1
The Lord is for me; I will not fear; what can man do to me? PSA 118:6
It is the Lord of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, and He shall be your dread. ISA 8:13
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them. O fear the Lord, you His saints; for to those who fear Him, there is no want. PSA 34:7,9
Just as a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. PSA 103:13
The Lord favors those who fear Him, those who wait for His lovingkindness. PSA 147:11
In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and his children will have refuge. PRO 14:26
The fear of the Lord leads to life, so that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil. PRO 19:23
There are other references, but these state it clearly. If you fear the Lord, you will follow the destiny He gives you. If you fear the Lord, captivity will not hurt you. If you fear the Lord, you will know when to escape. If you fear the Lord, you will learn how to survive. If you fear the Lord, you will endure to the end.
You shall follow the Lord your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him. DEU 13:4
The book of Revelation shares a confirming clue about the saints who make it through the Great Tribulation.
...who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. REV 12:17
Preparing for the Great Tribulation is serious business. Literally, hundreds of decisions must be made if you are to prepare properly for your family and brethren. Noah was moved by fear to build an ark. Noah was saved. Joseph, fearing seven years of famine, counseled Pharaoh how to prepare. Joseph became Viceroy of Egypt and his entire family was saved. Whatever and however you decide to prepare, be moved by the fear of the Lord and His soon coming. That is the secret to preparing.
Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Thy name? For Thou alone art holy; for all the nations will come and worship before Thee, for Thy righteous acts have been revealed. REV 15:4

We've been blessed by Jews, in ways we didn't know
The greatest blessing the Nations have received through the Jewish people is the Law of God and the knowledge of Messiah. In Romans 9:4,5 Paul tells us that God gave the Jewish people the adoption as sons, the divine glory, the covenants, the law, temple worship, the promises, the patriarchs and the Messiah.
Throughout history, God has also blessed the Nations through His Jews in material ways. This is in fulfilment of the promise God made to Abraham: "Through you all the nations of the earth will be blessed." This not only speaks of the spiritual blessing, but also of blessings in the natural sphere as well. Read how...

A huge Star of David -- a symbol of Judaism -- soars above the front door of Zion Baptist Church in the Hill District. That's okay with Rev. The church's one-time use as a synagogue only enhances its religious significance, he said. More...

Baby steps to a one-world government By Dianne James What used to be considered a wild theory dreamed up by conspiratorial minds is now getting the attention of many bible scholars and clergy. The worldwide populace, whether they know it or not, is taking baby steps to a world government in which sovereignty will be only a domestic policing type of issue. What we enjoy now is changing. Watching what is happening in Israel is now a necessary pasttime for many who believe in the prophecies of Daniel, Ezekiel, the book of Revelations, and others. They believe that what happens in Israel is key to fulfilment of prophecy. Websites like watch.org keep an eye on world issues, because they know that we cannot keep our heads buried in the sand, albeit easy to do with so many distractions in our lives. Israel isn't the only place we should be watching. An astute student of life will watch what's in his own backyard, as well. Many feel that the Patriot Act is a baby step toward a one-world government. Environmentalists, also, are going to play a large role, as they have already begun to do so. An article in Science Daily focuses on how "world land use is seen as a top environmental issue"- The massive conversion of the world's natural landscapes to agriculture and other human uses may soon begin to undermine the capacity of the planet's ecosystems to sustain a burgeoning human population... how humans are using the land, is not acceptable. Notice the word "humans". This and other environmentalist actions show how just one "baby" step can open dialogue about an issue, which leads to more dialogue, more studies, meetings, public awareness, possibly public manipulation, government committees, government referendums and new laws that put another nail in the coffin of both sovereignty and private ownership. The scary thing is, many of us agree with most of what the environmentalists are saying about stewardship of the land. What I don't agree with is the forcing upon nations a one-world view and agenda aimed at limiting our rights to decide what we do with "our" land (it all, after all, belongs to God, not us). If you really want to know the truth, farmers should be letting the land rest every seven years, not to be "under the law" but because it's just common sense. No, rotating crops is not the same thing. Those old testament laws were based on common sense, a commodity which is becoming a rarity. At the time those laws were given, God said he would bless the farmer with so much on the sixth year, that it would be enough to last them for the seventh year and even beyond. Somehow, we quit believing. Oh we of little faith... |

A New Kind of Calm in the Family
By Gina Ritter
There's a new kind of fun and calm out there in the name of the Better Behavior Wheel, invented by Julie Butler and her family in central British Columbia. In an interesting twist on charts and discipline, this versatile wheel can be hung on a wall or toted with you in the car and on vacations. It's a way to get whole family involvement, and a little bit of humor to get us over the discipline bumps.
Kayla Fay, publisher of Who Put the Ketchup in the Medicine Cabinet? says, "This is the proverbial spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down! Only a loving parent could come up with such an effective way to discipline children."
As the Wheel Turns originally, the wheel sprang from constant battles between Julie's 9- and 12-year-old children, David and Laura. With battles raging in their home, Julie and her husband decided they must find some way to keep the peace. Julie says, "We hated the atmosphere of tension that would invariably follow these exchanges. Our once happy home was being turned into a war zone, and it felt like there were land mines scattered beneath our feet. One night, in desperation, we called the kids into the living room and told them how upsetting their behavior was. We asked them for suggestions on how we could restore peace and serenity back into the family." The kids were sent to their room to come up with at least six appropriate consequences for their next fight. David and Laura presented the family with consequences like: Clean the other person's room Do dishes for the other person Make the other person's bed for a week Lend your favorite CD or game to the other person for a week Make a list of ten good things about the other person Hug and make up….
These suggestions were arranged around the perimeter of a board, and a spinner attached to the middle. The premise was that the spinner would choose the consequence for them, and they would hang the board in plain view in the kitchen. Julie remembers, "We crossed our fingers, and waited. And waited. It was amazing. Just the presence of the board, hanging on our kitchen wall, had an instant calming effect on the atmosphere in our home. Occasionally we'd see one of the kids standing in front of the board, idly flicking the spinner, checking it out. But the fighting had stopped."
Of course, the battle was won, but not the war. Ten days later, the fighting began again, but this time they were prepared. Says Julie, "We called them both into the kitchen, took the board down off the wall, and placed it on the table. They knew what they had to do. How could they refuse? They chose the consequences. They practically invented the board. It landed on the most dreaded consequence of all: Hug and make up!" Once the fighting subsided, Julie realized there were other behaviors she also wished to curb. "It seemed like the kids were always leaving the lights on when they left a room. Or they'd leave the TV on when they went to bed. Why not make another wheel with consequences related to wasting electricity?"
Eventually, eight themes were added: Excessive Arguing Leaving the Lights On Not Putting Things Away A Job Poorly Done Stretching the Truth Taking Without Asking Talking Back Wheel of Just Desserts (rewards) Forty-eight consequences and 16 rewards are printed on peel-and-stick paper with colorful eye-catching graphics, enabling parents to customize the wheel to meet their family's needs. Just cut them out and stick them on. It's very easy to make up your own consequences and themes. Interestingly, Julie says the wheel lowers her stress, keeps the consequences appropriate, and removes parents from the "Bad Guy" label.
In the past, she and her husband would have to repeatedly ask David to do something, only to hear him say, "I know." This would come to a boil, and in anger they would yell and exact a punishment too harsh for the infraction. Now, the wheel does all the work. "David, it's 8:15; you haven't started the dishes yet. I'm afraid we'll have to spin the wheel." "But, Mom!" "I'm sorry, Dear. It's really not up to me. Those are the rules we all agreed on. Gee, I hope you don't land on a really bad consequence." Julie says, "The amazing thing is, we're no longer the bad guys. We can actually root for the kids as they drag themselves up to the wheel. It's no longer 'us against them'. It's the wheel that they have to answer to. But the greatest thing of all is that we hardly ever have to use the wheel. It hangs on the kitchen wall, acting as a watchdog and reminder."
What Else? The Butlers' website, shows some parents of ADHD children have found the wheel to be a wonderful program. That is great news for many! Every parent should work with their child's personality and decide if the wheel is right for them, keeping in mind that every program doesn't work with every child. There are a couple of letters on Julie's site from parents asking for help with children who are completely out of control. One mother says her five-year-old "beats (his big sister), kills animals, curses, and destroys everything in his path." Another mother said her six-year-old adopted daughter has angry outbursts and goes in cycles. She wondered what to do when her child refuses the consequences and it starts another battle. These are warning signs of something more serious than just a discipline problem. Often, young children and teenagers exhibiting these symptoms have a physical problem that can cause behavioral changes, such as infections, Lyme Disease and thyroid problems. Mental disorders such as early-onset bipolar disorder can also cause very similar symptoms and must be diagnosed and treated immediately. In these cases, the Wheel would not be appropriate and medical intervention is needed immediately. For help, contact your pediatrician and look for information on these diseases and disorders on the Internet. However, there is still a possibility that the wheel will be valuable with a child who is stabilized. Again, parents will have to make the decision to try the wheel according to each child.
The Last Word Parents of children with normal behavior and discipline problems are encouraged to try this wheel and have a little fun with discipline! Bringing the whole family into the discipline decision-making is an excellent way to work as a team and come to a peaceful solution. The wheel isn't meant to exact negative punishment on a child, but rather remind them to pick their battles and mind their parents. Teachers and parents alike will find the wheel very useful in classrooms and homes everywhere with children ages four and up!

Meander Magazine Publisher's Note:

When my children were young, I was a single working parent, and one of our favorite times of day was when I read to them at night. We went through the entire Trixie Belden mystery series, and every Hank the Cowdog we could find. I even got caught up in the stories. I read for thirty minutes every night right before their bedtime, and many times, they'd beg me to read more. I will never forget those times, some of my life's favorites. Reading to your children (or reading a little longer), if they're small, would be a great "reward" to add to the Better Behavior Wheel.
Use the things your kids (ages 4 through teen) like to do the most for rewards. The fact that they are the ones who decide on the punishment and rewards is what makes this thing so effective.
The Better Behavior Wheel, a small price to pay for peace.

The Day of the Lord By Monte Judah When I was 14 years of age, I attended Abilene High School in Abilene, Kansas. At the urging of my mother, I enrolled in Miss Edberg’s Latin class. Miss Edberg had been my Mother’s previous teacher. She was a very mature sweet lady who had never married, but was devoted as a teacher and care provider of her own mother. It was true that she was sweet, but she also could frown and scowl at substandard student performance. I mention this because I didn’t like Latin class all that much, and Miss Edberg wasn’t all that happy with my academic performance. During that year of school, someone announced and it was covered by the national news outlets that the world would end on a certain date at precisely 1:30 p.m. It was the first time I had ever heard of the phrase “the Day of the Lord” and its “end of the world” prediction. It was frightening to me but what made it worse was the timing. My Latin class was from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. That meant that the world was going to end and my last hour here on the Earth would be in Miss Edberg’s Latin class. It was more than frightening; it was downright depressing. On the day in question, Miss Edberg made mention of the prediction. It was one of the few times I saw her smile. At the conclusion of the class, she noted with the same smile that the world had not ended. I wasn’t sure whether she was talking about the prediction or just her class in general. But this was my first introduction to the subject of the Day of the Lord. The Day of the Lord is prophesied in the Bible. In fact, it is a major theme and specific phrase used by many prophets in the Bible. It is the dominant subject for the books of Joel and Zephaniah. However, if you go to your average believer today, especially one that is interested in the second coming of the Messiah, you will hear a variety of explanations for what the “Day of the Lord” is. If you persist in questioning how it relates to the Great Tribulation, the Rapture, and the Second Coming, then you hear even more befuddling explanations. The truth is that most believers have only heard the phrase but they don’t know if it is one day or a period of time. However, if you do not know what the “Day of the Lord” is, you are more than spiritually uninformed, you are in great personal danger. The question of knowing and understanding the “Day of the Lord” is posed by the prophet Amos. His answer is striking and speaks to the lack of understanding of many and the danger posed. Alas, you who are longing for the day of the Lord, for what purpose will the day of the Lord be to you? It will be darkness and not light; as when a man flees from a lion, and a bear meets him, or goes home, leans his hand against the wall, and a snake bites him. Will not the day of the Lord be darkness instead of light, even gloom with no brightness in it? AMO 5:18-20 Defining the Day of the Lord A day of darkness and gloom is more than an expression of “Doom and Gloom.” There really will be darkness and clouds. Imagine for a moment that the world is plunged into darkness with no sun, moon, or stars to be seen. Imagine the density of the clouds that have blocked the light from reaching the surface of the earth. Now listen to the prophet Zephaniah describe the day to you. Near is the great day of the Lord, near and coming very quickly; Listen, the day of the Lord! In it the warrior cries out bitterly. A day of wrath is that day, a day of trouble and distress, a day of destruction and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, Before we go any further with this subject, let’s correct the biggest misunderstanding about the Day of the Lord. If you are a mortal man or in the flesh on the surface of the Earth when this day comes, you will not survive. There is no hole deep enough, no closet to be hidden in, no city immune that will prevent the complete destruction of all inhabitants of the Earth. Anyone telling you otherwise, does not know what the Day of Lord is. The completeness of this destruction is specifically addressed by the same prophet Zephaniah. “I will completely remove all things From the face of the earth,” declares the Lord. “I will remove man and beast; I will remove the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, and the ruins along with the wicked; and I will cut off man from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord. ZEP 1:2-3 It will be on all nations. No one survives the Day of the Lord (not even animals). Be silent before the Lord God! For the day of the Lord is near, for the Lord has prepared a sacrifice, He has consecrated His guests. Then it will come about on the day of the Lord's sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, the king's sons, and all who clothe themselves with foreign garments. ZEP 1:7-8 It will be upon the land of Israel. Israel is not exempt from the Day of the Lord. “And on that day,” declares the Lord, “There will be the sound of a cry from the Fish Gate, A wail from the Second Quarter, and a loud crash from the hills. ‘Wail, O inhabitants of the Mortar, for all the people of Canaan will be silenced; all who weigh out silver will be cut off.’ And it will come about at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are stagnant in spirit, who say in their hearts, ‘The Lord will not do good or evil!’” ZEP 1:10-12 Interestingly enough, the Fish Gate, the Second Quarter, and the Mortar (the Merchants) are referring to a very specific place in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is geographically the center of the Muslim Quarter. The prophet Joel speaks to the same decisive destruction of the Lord this way. Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, and it will come as destruction from the Almighty. JOE 1:15 Blow a trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm on My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming; surely it is near, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness. As the dawn is spread over the mountains, so there is a great and mighty people; there has never been anything like it, nor will there be again after it to the years of many generations. JOE 2:1-2 Let the nations be aroused and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat, For there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the wine press is full; the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision. The sun and moon grow dark, and the stars lose their brightness. JOE 3:12-15 The valley of Jehoshaphat is the valley of Jezreel where the mountain of Meggido is. That particular mountain in Hebrew is called Harmageddo. You may be more familiar with the English version: Armageddon. Isaiah describes the Day of the Lord this way. For the Lord of hosts will have a day of reckoning against everyone who is proud and lofty, and against everyone who is lifted up, that he may be abased. And the pride of man will be humbled, and the loftiness of men will be abased, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day. ISA 2:12,17 Wail, for the day of the Lord is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty. ISA 13:6 Behold, the day of the Lord is coming, cruel, with fury and burning anger, to make the land a desolation; and He will exterminate its sinners from it. ISA 13:9 Therefore I shall make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken from its place at the fury of the Lord of hosts in the day of His burning anger. ISA 13:13 Ezekiel describes the Day of the Lord this way: No one survives the Day of the Lord, even if you are in a space capsule. Son of man, prophesy and say, “Thus says the Lord God, ‘Wail, Alas for the day!’ For the day is near, even the day of the Lord is near; it will be a day of clouds, a time of doom for the nations.” EZE 30:2-3 Obadiah describes the Day of the Lord this way. For the day of the Lord draws near on all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you. Your dealings will return on your own head. OBA 1:15 Malachi describes the Day of the Lord with those judged resulting in ashes. For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff; and the day that is coming will set them ablaze," says the Lord of hosts, "so that it will leave them neither root nor branch." And you will tread down the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day which I am preparing," says the Lord of hosts. MAL 4:1,3 The Apostle Peter made the same reference to the complete destruction of t
a day of trumpet and battle cry, against the fortified cities and the high corner towers. And I will bring distress on men, so that they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the Lord; and their blood will be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung. Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them on the day of the Lord's wrath; and all the earth will be devoured in the fire of His jealousy, for He will make a complete end, indeed a terrifying one, of all the inhabitants of the earth. ZEP 1:14-18
